Guidance to Applicants
Information for students who wish to apply for a grant
Please read carefully before completing an application form and retain it for future use.
NB: From January 2024 all applications MUST be submitted online via this website.
1. Applications will be welcomed from those requiring financial assistance who attended Fowey River Academy (previously Fowey Community College) for at least three years.
2. Applicants must be under 25 years old on the 1st of September in the year of the first application.
3. ALL applicants should complete the appropriate Application Form, making sure that all contact and banking details are updated. The Personal Statement section, which should be written in Standard English, MUST be completed each year and could include:
personal circumstances and explanation of reasons for claiming financial assistance.
how you envisage spending (or have spent) the money
career ambitions and reasons for your choice of course or an update on your progress
evidence of past attainment, character, responsibility, social awareness (for example, details of interests, hobbies and leisure pursuits, community service).
4. Applications for Grants from prospective further education students (i.e. those about to embark on the first year of their course) should be submitted after examination results (e.g. “A” Levels/GCSE) are published, and the offer of a place has been confirmed. Grants to such students will be paid at the start of the second term on receipt of proof of attendance by the educational establishment.
5. New applicants who have already completed at least one year and those re-applying will have to arrange for an email confirming their continued attendance on the course to be sent by a person such as a tutor, lecturer admissions officer or employer who works at the educational establishment. Grants to these students will be made in November each year if all criteria have been met.
7. Grants may be made for the duration of a course, including time spent abroad by language students or on work placement where these are integral to the course. They will not be made for years repeated either for change of course or failure to pass the requisite examinations.
8. Grants are available to students over the age of 18 who are taking courses which do not lead to a degree or equivalent qualification as well as those over 16 who are doing vocational training requiring special equipment or items of clothing.
9. Money is NOT available for “A” level or GCSE courses.
10. The closing date for applications is October 20th for those on courses tied to the academic year, and the Trustees regret that applications received after this date cannot be considered.
11. All other applications may be submitted at any time.
Guidance and Advice to Applicants
ALL awards will now be called GRANTS and will be made at the Trustees’ discretion to those who qualify and show that they meet the basic criteria of requiring financial assistance.
Increased amounts are available where applicants prove substantial financial need.
Relevant details should be brought to the Trustees’ attention in your Personal Statement.
No one has an automatic right to grants, which are made on merit and achievement, and may in any year also be reduced, or wholly or partly withheld on the evidence of Personal Statements and tutors’ reports.
The grants are NOT means-tested and never have to be re-paid.
To avoid disappointment, please take note of the following points:
All correspondence should be conducted by the applicant personally.
All applications are to be made online on the website foweygrammarschoolfoundation.org
All required details must be clear and updated (telephone numbers, email address, bank details, contact for lecturer or tutor to confirm attendance)
NB. It is your responsibility to arrange for the official email to be sent confirming your attendance.
Any grants that have not been claimed by 31st March of the following year will be forfeited.
The Clerk can be contacted directly by telephone or email for advice or information.
